CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Junior Lucy Smith scored her second goal of the year as the Lee women's soccer team defeated the University of Alabama in Huntsville 1-0 on Wednesday evening at the Ray Conn Sports Complex. The Lady Flames improved to 6-1-2 in GSC play and 9-1-3 overall. The Chargers dropped to 3-5-1 and 5-7-1.
Lee will return to road action on Saturday (2 p.m.) and face Christian Brothers University (Memphis). The Lady Flames will close the regular season at the Ray Conn Sports Complex on Oct. 23 when Delta State University visits.
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Flames tallied the only score of the contest in the 60th minute (60:33) when Smith put the ball in the back of the net on an assist from Whitney Carrigan. Lee took 17 shots overall, but only four were on target. Carrigan had two of the shots, and Aubrey O'Meara fired the fourth.
The Lee defense held UAH to nine shots, but the Chargers placed four on goal. Kaitlyn Lewis had two on target while Carley White and Michella Tortelli placed the other shots on goal. Abby Whitcomb was credited with four saves and had a huge save in the final period for the Lady Flames. CeCe Szopa was tough in the box for the losers and a total of three saves.
The Lady Flames dominated in the second half and had seven corner kicks, finishing the evening with a total of nine. On the other hand, the Chargers had only one corner the entire 90 minutes. Isabella Valentine, Molly Cook and Emma Nelson played 90 minutes for Lee.
Fouls were almost even. Lee was whistled for nine and UAH eight. Each squad received a yellow card.
Coach Lee Hughes's Thoughts:
"Abby Whitcomb was huge for us in goal tonight. Had two one-on-one attempts by UAH and came up with big saves both times. Still always looking to get better every day and we saw improvement today."
