Flames Drop 6-1 Contest to No. 1 West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 23 Lee University women's tennis lost its first match of the season with a 6-1 defeat at No. 1 University of West Florida. The Argonauts improved to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in the GSC, while the Flames fell to 5-1 with a 3-1 GSC record.

UWF claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two positions. Goncalo Quintela and Rafael Sabio beat Stefan Mos and Filipe Krohn 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. The second-ranked team of Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon secured the 1-0 lead for UWF with a 6-3 defeat of Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen. Francisco Guimarães and Rytis Razminas were leading Mark Neyelov and Samuel Vidales 5-4 when the No. 3 doubles match was left unfinished.

Duran, ranked No. 3, beat No. 39 Groenendijk 6-0, 6-3 at the second position to begin singles scoring. Mos lost 6-3 and 6-2 to Neyelov at the fourth position and Vicente Couto took two of three sets to beat Langerhuizen to clinch the team victory.

Razminas held off Quintela 7-5 and 6-4 to avoid the shutout. Sabio, ranked No. 57, outlasted Guimarães at No. 5 singles. Guimarães won the first set 7-6, lost the second set 7-5 and posted a tiebreaker of 9-7 to win the third set 7-6.

In a match of top 15 opponents, No. 4 Rondon needed three sets to record the win against No. 14 Krohn. Rondon won the first set 6-1 and Krohn forced a third set with a 6-2 score in the second set. Rondon won the third set 7-6 following a 7-5 margin in a tiebreaker.

The Flames remain on the road with a trip to Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, on Sunday afternoon. The non-conference match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
