TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 12
th-ranked and second-seeded Lee University men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the GSC Championship with a 4-0 win over No. 7 seed Delta State Thursday afternoon at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.
The Flames (12-1) quickly gained the doubles point with wins at the second and third doubles positions. Rytis Razminas and Francisco Guimarães took down Juan Diego Alzate and Joaquin Jarochevsky 6-2, while Stefan Mos and Filipe Krohn beat Alejandro Bravo and Simon Ojeda 6-4. The No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished with Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen leading Valentino Millimaci and Valentin Greco 5-4.
Guimarães opened the singles scoring with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Millimaci at No. 5 singles. Razminas held off Ojeda 6-2 and 7-5 to put Lee ahead 3-0. Langerhuizen used a 9-7 tiebreaker to win his first set with Alzate 7-6 and completed the No. 3 singles win with a 6-2 margin in the second set to clinch the team victory.
The final three singles matches were left unfinished. Krohn, ranked No. 16, was leading Greco 4-3 in the second set after winning the first set with a 7-5 tiebreaker. Groenendijk, ranked No. 33, had split the first two sets with Castillo and was headed to the third set. Mos was up 6-5 in the second set with Bravo after winning the opening set 6-4 at the fourth position.
The Flames will face No. 3 seed West Alabama on Friday at 11 a.m. EDT. The 16
th-ranked Tigers are 15-6 overall after defeating Valdosta State 4-0 earlier in the day.
