TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 33
rd-ranked and fifth-seeded Lee University women's tennis team fell in the quarterfinals of the GSC Championship by a 4-0 score to No. 4 seed Valdosta State Thursday evening at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.
The Lady Flames recorded one win in the doubles competition as the No. 20 Lady Blazers (11-8) earned the doubles point after securing the other two doubles matches.
VSU opened doubles with a 6-3 win by Carmelle Vial and Kitti Nemeth against Nicolette Fuhr and Vitória Maximiliano. Rima Yoshida and Andrea Pascual Blanca evened the doubles score with a 6-4 defeat of Lena Beckx and Milica Prokic.
Maria Fernanda Duarte and Aliyah Dwyer battled Charleigh Fay and Ivana Castillo at No. 2 doubles to determine the doubles point. Fay and Castillo edged Duarte and Dwyer 7-5 in a tiebreaker to win the deciding point 7-6.
Fay pushed the VSU advantage to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Maximiliano at No. 4 singles. Fuhr pushed Nemeth to a first-set tiebreaker where she was outscored 7-0, before Nemeth claimed sixth position with a 6-1 margin in the second set.
Beckx was pushed to three sets by Pascual, ranked No. 68, at No. 2 singles. Beckx won the opening set 6-2 and Pascual forced a third set with a 6-4 win in the second set. Beckx clinched the team victory with a 6-0 score in the third set.
The final three singles matches were left unfinished. Yoshida and Prokic were tied at 6-6 in the third set of the No. 1 singles competition. Castillo, ranked No. 45, was leading Dwyer 2-1 in the third set of their No. 3 singles battle. Duarte and Vial were tied 5-5 in the third set of their No. 5 singles match when the team contest was decided.
