NEWBERRY, S.C. – In the final tune-up before Gulf South Conference action begins, the Lee University men's soccer team defeated Newberry College 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The Flames improved to 3-0-2 while Newberry fell to 0-3. The two goals were the most goals scored in a contest by Lee this season.
Neither team had many chances in the first half. Lee had six shot and forced two saves from the Wolves. Lee did not allow a single shot in the first half.
Just out of the halftime break, Lee got on the board. In the 49
th minute, Zane Marsh took a pass and blasted a shot into the top left corner to give Lee the 1-0 lead.
The Flames doubled the lead in the 77
th minute when Reed Shnkwiler played a through ball to Willem Cooley who lofted it over the goalkeeper. It was the first career goal for Cooley.
Newberry scored their only goal in the 83
rd minute when Shotaro Sekinada converted a penalty kick.
The Flames outshot the wolves 20-3 in the game. Charles Carriglitto had one save while Newberry's goalkeeper had seven saves.
The Flames will start GSC action on Saturday. They will travel to Auburn University Montgomery and will take on the Warhawks at 8 PM EST.
Coach Derek Potteiger's Thoughts:
"This was a tricky game for us and so I'm certainly glad for the win. Coming off a battle at home this past Saturday and the start of GSC play this coming Saturday; I was worried that this game may not get the attention it deserves.
But we played well for long stretches of the game and got some key players a balance of game time and rest, and so I will take the result.
We certainly need to make sure we see out games and not give our opponents any hope at the end, and so that is definitely something we can and will learn from this game; but all in all, we will take it and now will focus our attention on the GSC."
