MONTGOMERY, Ala. – It was the first game in ten days for the Lee University women's soccer team and once again they had to deal with weather delays. Lee defeated Auburn University Montgomery 1-0 to earn their first Gulf South Conference win of the season. The Flames improved to 3-0-1 while AUM fell to 2-2-2
The Flames had several opportunities in the first half; they took eight shots with five on goal. Leslie Azouer for AUM made five saves in goal. Ava Smith had two shots while six others had one shot apiece.
In the second half, Lee had a couple of opportunities before play was stopped in the 61
st minute. A lightning delay paused the action for almost an hour before the action resumed. Lee kept knocking on the door and finally in the 74
th minute they found the back of the net. Megan Davis had a free kick on the right side of the field. She put it towards the goal and it went in off of an AUM player to give Lee the only goal needed.
The Flames outshot AUM 14-2. With a nine to one advantage in shots on goal. Abby Whitcomb made one save in the contest.
Davis, Ava Smith, and Sydney Clements each had two shots in the game.
Lee will return home for the GSC home opener on Wednesday, September 16 as they will host the University of West Alabama.
Coach Lee Hughes's Thoughts:
"AUM made it very difficult for us tonight, all credit to John Robertson (AUM Head Coach)! We had to make a bunch of adjustments to try and break them down, it just took a little longer than we wanted! But we leave this game with lots of areas we need to grow in! Our job next is to just keep getting better!"
