Lee men's golfer Corey Sheppard has been named the Lee University Male Athlete of the Week after guiding the Flames to a dominating victory in the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament last week.
The 36-hole event was held in Mt. Sterling, Ky. at the Old Silos Golf Course. The windy, cool and sometimes wet conditions seemed to be well-suited for Sheppard, a native of Salisbury, England . The freshman put together two consecutive under-par rounds of 70 and 71 for a 141-total in leading the Flames to a dominating 30-stroke team victory while also earning medalist honors.
"Great to see Corey pick up his first collegiate win," said head coach John Maupin after viewing the impressive results. " He had a very good tournament."
The Flames are the defending national champs and earned a second straight trip to the annual tournament by winning the Mid-East Region. "We are looking forward to a return trip to the NCCAA National Championship," Maupin concluded.Â
The National Championship will be held Oct. 27-29 in Panama City, Fla. Lee will play one more tournament prior to the event as they take part in the North Alabama TVA Credit Union Classic from Florence, Ala. on Oct. 20-21.
