BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the fourth time this season, Lee University's Micaela Belen Maiz was announced as the Gulf South Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week.
The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, went 2-1 at No. 4 singles and was 3-0 at No. 1 doubles to help the Lady Flames to a 2-1 record this past week against No. 13 West Alabama, at Auburn Montgomery and at Montevallo.
After dropping a 6-4, 6-2 match to Georgina Salom (UWA), she defeated Alba De La Torre (AUM) 6-3, 6-3; and beat Whitney Hamilton (Montevallo) 7-5, 6-1.
She teamed with Asia Grzegrzolka to win all three doubles matches, including two upset victories. They beat West Alabama's No. 23 team of Georgina Salom and Andrea Tomassone 6-3 and took down No. 34 Maria Garcia and Dorotea Hanzek from Montevallo 6-2. In between, the duo outlasted Sofia Navarro and Svenja Petri of AUM 7-6.
The Lady Flames will have a little time off before traveling to Montgomery, Ala., for the GSC Championship. The tournament will be held May 2-4 at Lagoon Park and O'Connor Tennis Center.
