Audrey Smith has been named Lee University's Female Athlete of the Week after placing first in the Sewanee Invitational on Saturday.
Smith, a sophomore from Kennesaw, Ga., paced all runners with a time of 22:52.87 for her first collegiate cross country win, in the 6K event. Jessica Childers and Savannah Ratcliff gave Lee three of the top five finishes. Childers was fourth (23:28.22) and Ratcliff was fifth (23:46.65). Amy Carpenter crossed the finish line at 23:51.10 for seventh place.
Smith, Childers and Ratcliff each eclipsed Ashley Matthew's school record of 23:48.
"Our women had a strong showing," said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. "We are really strong through our fourth runner. We expect to only get better over the next few weeks as our freshmen adapt to the training and begin to close the gap between our fourth and fifth women."
The Lady Flames will return to action on Sept. 12 when they participate in the Furman Cross Country Classic in Greenville, S.C.
