BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After scoring two goals in Lee’s 1-0-1 road trip to Alabama last weekend midfielder Jared McWhorter has been named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week the league office announced on Tuesday.
McWhorter was one of four Flames to find the back of the net in Friday’s 4-0 rout at Auburn Montgomery.
On Sunday the native of Woodstock, Ga. scored a late goal in regulation to briefly give the Flames a 2-1 lead before Montevallo scored in the final moments to tie the match. The battle would end in a 2-2 draw.
The speedy newcomer has made an immediate impact for the Flames as he leads the team in goals (3), points (7), shots (33) and shots on goal (13) for first-year head coach Derek Potteiger.
McWhorter and the Flames are now set for a big GSC home weekend to wrap up the conference schedule. Lee entertains Alabama Huntsville on Friday at 5 p.m. and West Alabama Sunday a 4 p.m.
The top six teams will advance to the GSC Tournament beginning Oct. 31. Lee is currently fifth (4-3-2, 14 points) and two points up on Montevallo and Spring Hill. The Chargers (5-1-2, 17 points) are fourth and the Tigers hold the top spot currently at 7-1 with 21 points.
