BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Posting back to back shutouts in two conference wins for the Lee men's soccer team this past weekend, junior goalkeeper Daniel Hrenko was named the Gulf South Conference Defender of the Week the league office announced on Tuesday.
Hrenko recorded six saves and faced 11 shots in Friday's 1-0 blanking of Auburn Montgomery. The Tampa, Fla. native completed the weekend sweep with two saves against nine shots in a 3-0 drubbing of Montevallo.
"Daniel has had a really solid season thus far. He does a number of things for us out of the back but of course most important is to make saves and he has come up big in all the right moments so far this season," said head coach Derek Potteiger. "He certainly deserves some recognition for his play, but ultimately this is an award for the whole team and in particular the defensive group. We need to take the current momentum and confidence that we built up here at home on the road this weekend as we head to Mississippi for two important GSC games."
Hrenko leads the GSC in goals against average this season at 0.63 allowing just five through the first eight matches.
The Flames (5-2-1, 3-0) will head on the road for the first time in the GSC this year as they travel to Mississippi to take on Delta State on Friday at 5 p.m. before testing Mississippi College on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
