BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior Courtney Shelton fired a 2-under 68 on Monday and helped direct the Lee women's golf team to its second straight championship in the annual BSC (Birmingham Southern College) Shootout.

Shelton not only led the team charge, the Franklin, Tenn. native claimed the medalist title with rounds of 71-68 - 139. Sewanee's Emily Javadi, who was the leader after the opening 18, slipped to a 72 on Monday and settled for a second-place tie with Piedmont College's Katarina Hodge, both finished the 36-hole event at 140.

"Courtney went into today realistically knowing that she needed to shoot under par to win individually and she did it," said assistant coach Jayne Maupin. "That is not easy to do. She showed a lot of mental toughness and deserved to win. This is back-to-back wins at this tournament for her."

As a team Lee was seven strokes better than the University of the Cumberlands (594). While the Lady Flames were completing Monday's round at 295, the Patriots were carding a day's-best 292. Centre College (603) was third. Methodist University (606) placed fourth and Washington University (St. Louis) rounded out the top five with a 608. A total of 22 teams took part in the tournament that was staged on the par 70 Highland Park Golf Club.

Junior Sloane Skinner improved her game by three strokes and tied for eighth-place (75-72 - 147). Freshman Bernadette Little tied for ninth (72-76 - 148). Both were named to the all-tournament team. Sophomore Madison Alexander totaled 74-79 - 153 and Chelsa Rakstraw rounded out the day with a 78-81 - 159. Some 124 players took part in the tourney.

"The conditions were difficult again today," added Maupin. "I was proud we were able to hang in there and pull out the win. Even though we didn't play as well as yesterday, it was a solid round. This was a deep, talented field. It is a great momentum boost for our girls and a tremendous feeling to be able to defend our title."
