DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Alan Vezza scored off a corner kick by Sam Fairhurst at the 66:58 mark of the second half to give 24th-ranked Embry Riddle a 1-0 victory over the Lee men's soccer team on Saturday evening.
It was the opening game of the season for the Eagles who return 18 players from last season’s Sun Conference championship team and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. The defeat evened Lee’s record at 1-1 and completed the two-match road trip.
Coach Paul Furey will send his Flames back into action next Friday at 7 p.m. when they face Olivet Nazarene in the opening round of the Lee Invitational.
The Eagles’ defense controlled the match. They limited the Flames to only five shots and none were on goal. On the other hand, Embry Riddle fired 12 shots and placed four on target. Keeper Tom Halsall recorded three saves. Lee had 10 corner kicks and the Eagles 12, including the shot that helped set up the game-winner.
The Flames had an opportunity to possibly generate some offense with 12 minutes remaining in the second half. An Eagle player was ejected and the host club played a man down the remainder of the contest.
