CLEVELAND, Miss. - Midfielder Chevon Roberts tallied two goals and produced what turned out to be the winning score in the 73rd minute in leading the Lee men's scorer team to a 3-2 victory over the Delta State Statesmen on Sunday afternoon.
The Flames completed the rugged weekend Gulf South series with a double-overtime 1-1 draw on Friday, and then regrouped with the win on Sunday in Mississippi. The victory gave Lee a season sweep over Delta State. Last week the Flames defeated West Alabama to complete a sweep in that series.
Freshman Eli Price got the Flames on the board at the 17:59 mark and gave his team a 1-0 lead at the break. It was Price's first goal of the season.
"Eli (Price) had a terrific individual effort to put us up 1-0 and set up Chevy (Roberts) beautifully to give us a 2-0 lead," said coach Paul Furey. "Our boys overcame a number of challenges and did what it took to get the result on the road."
The Flames moved on top 2-0 in the 50th minute when the ever-present Roberts collected an assist from Price and ripped his shot into the back of the net. "Chevy stepped up to give us two goals to lead the way," said Furey after the victory.
But the Statesmen would not go down without a fight. Jaxon Lambert made it a 2-1 contest in the 58th minute and then, after being rewarded with a penalty kick, tied the contest at two.
"It seems we like to make things interesting by letting Delta State equalize," stressed Furey. "But we kept our composure and got the job done."
Roberts ended any thoughts of the Flames going into their seventh overtime match of the season when he scored on a header off an assist from frehman David Perez in the 73rd minute.
Lee made the best of nine shots, placing four on goal and two in the net. The Flames' defense limited Delta State to 10 shots and three were on target. Tom Halsall had two saves in goal for Lee.
The Flames improved to an impressive 6-3-4 overall and an eye-catching 5-2-4 in Gulf South play. They will return to the Lee Soccer Field on Friday and host Union University at 7:00 p.m.
