The Flames and Bulldogs tangle for the 47
th time tonight and Lee holds a 27-19 edge in the series that dates all the way back to the coaching days of Dale Hughes and TWC's Dwain Farmer. Those who have witnessed the majority of the meetings will quickly tell you that these contests have usually been filled with action and excitement.
TWC OFF TO 3-1 START
The Bulldogs, under the direction of Mike Poe (10
th year), lost in a season-opener to NAIA power Pikeville (Ky.) but have since posted impressive wins over Hiwassee, Dalton State and Montreat College. In the win over Montreat, junior guard Shannon Smith was outstanding with 31 points, 10-of-11 free-throwing shooting, seven assists and five steals.
FLAMES FRESH OFF WIN OVER JOHNSON
Lee used a balanced attack to run past Johnson University 99-61 in its regular-season opener. The Flames were led by freshman Jervon Johnson who hit 8-of-14 shots from the field and 3-of-8 3-point attempts to finish with 20 points. Four other Lee players scored in double figures. Junior Jay Marquette came off the bench to score 13 points and grab six rebounds. Junior Corey Billingsley followed with 12 points. Sophomore Evan Forhetz was 3-of-3 from behind the arc and finished with 11 markers. Forhetz also dished off three assists. Freshman Stedmon Ford rounded out the double-figure attack with 10 points. Valentino Thomas and Tyquan Roberts tallied nine points apiece.
BUSY WEEK FOR BROWN'S CLUB
After facing TWC, the Flames will host Bryan College next Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Walker Arena. It will mark the 87
th meeting between the long-time rivals. Coach Tommy Brown will take his team to Young Harris, Ga. next Friday and Saturday and take part in the Peach Belt/Gulf South Classic. Lee will face host Young Harris on Friday at 8:30 and turn right around and challenge North Georgia on Saturday at 4:30. Shorter is the other Gulf South team in the two-day classic.
RETURN TO WALKER ARENA ON DEC. 9
After the contest with Bryan next Tuesday, the Flames will have only three home games remaining before the Christmas break. Former Southern States Athletic Conference opponent Truett-McConnell will visit on Dec. 9 and Lee will open its Gulf South schedule at home against West Florida on Dec. 16 and then host Valdosta State on Dec. 19. The Flames return on Jan. 4 at North Alabama and will face nothing but GSC clubs the rest of the remainder of the regular season.
