The Lee volleyball team will play host to the NCCAA Mid-East Region Volleyball Championship. The Lady Flames enter the tournament as the No. 1-seed and will be joined by Campbellsville, Mid-Continent, Union (Tenn.) and Victory.
Home Court Advantage
The Lady Flames (16-8) are currently riding a 12-game winning streak on the sport court at Walker Arena. Coach Andrea Hudson's club went undefeated at home in Gulf South Conference play including a 3-2 victory over GSC Champion and perennial NCAA DII power West Florida on Sept. 21. Lee would also score home victories over Mid-East Region foes Campbellsville (Oct. 22) and Union (Nov. 8).
Senior Leadership
Seniors Camil Martinez, Paula Martins, Libby Peigen, Rachael Cunningham and Becky Bourne will play their final matches at Walker Arena this weekend.
Martinez has had quite a year racking up 707 assists and 228 digs for the Lady Flames. The Dominican Republic setter also guided her country to a silver medal finish in the U23 World Championships earlier this fall. Martins leads the team in kills with 314 while Peigen registered 295 digs from her libero position before having her season ended due to a knee injury.
Tournament Preview
Campbellsville (25-8) enters as the No. 2 seed. The Tigers will look to exact some revenge on the Lady Flames after dropping a hard fought five-set battle with Lee earlier in the year. Mid-Continent grabs the third seed as they finished 18-10 under first year coach Lindsey Davis. Fellow GSC member Union (9-22) holds the fourth seed while Victory (15-8) out of Memphis rounds out the tournament field.
The action gets underway Friday at 10 a.m. when Campbellsville squares off with Victory. The Lady Flames will play its first match with Union on Friday at noon before squaring off with Mid-Continent at 7 p.m. Lee will turnaround on Saturday and battle Victory at 2 p.m. before a showdown with the Tigers to wrap up the tournament at 6 p.m.
The tournament champion will be the team with the best record at the end of pool play and will advance to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. beginning Dec. 5.
