The Lee volleyball team punched its ticket to the NCCAA National Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Campbellsville on Saturday night to capture the Mid-East Region Tournament title in front of a delighted home crowd at Walker Arena.
The Lady Flames stormed through the region dropping just one set over four matches this weekend.
Lee 3, Campbellsville 1
Lee found themselves in an unfamiliar spot in Saturday's final match with the Lady Tigers as they dropped their first set of the weekend 15-25. The home team would rally back however and take the second set 25-23 before scoring two convincing victories (25-18, 25-17) in the final two sets two close out the match.
Paula Martins capped off a tremendous tournament performance with 18 kills to lead the offensive attack for the Lady Flames. The senior was named Tournament Most Valuable Player after the match. Latrice Johnson collected 16 slams of her own to go along with eight digs. Lauren Williams finished with 12 kills and registered a .632 attack percentage. Camil Martinez set the table with 45 assists while adding seven kills. Williams and Martinez joined Martins as members of the All-Tournament squad.
The win not only secures the Lady Flames a spot at nationals it also marks their 20th victory of the season (20-8). Coach Andrea Hudson's clubs have now won a remarkable 20 or more matches in 20 consecutive seasons under her leadership.
The victory also extends the Lady Flames home winning streak. Since dropping the opening match on Sept. 7 Lee has won 17 consecutive home matches.
The loss drops Campbellsville to 28-9 on the season. The Lady Tigers were paced by Rinata Aisena's 14 kills and Kelly Moyer's 10. Giselle Hernandez added nine kills and was named to the All-Tournament team joining teammate Caitlin Dressing. Jackie Schwieger set up the Lady Tiger offense with 45 assists.
The Lady Flames now set their sights on a national title when they begin in the NCCAA National Championship on Dec. 5 in Kissimmee, Fla.
Lee 3, Victory 0
Lee continued to run through the competition in the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament topping Victory (15-12) in straight sets (25-11, 25-14, 25-9) Saturday afternoon in Walker Arena.
Lee used a balance scoring attack to pull away from the Eagles. Martins continued her stellar play with a game-high nine slams. Johnson followed with eight kills and Williams added seven of her own. Following the match Martins, Johnson and Williams were named to the NCCAA Mid-East All-Region team and were joined by teammates Martinez and Libby Peigen.
Sarah Davis led the defensive effort with 17 digs. Both Martinez and Becky Bourne saw time at the setter position. Martinez finished with 15 assists while Bourne pitched in 14.
Victory's Iva Cotric led the way for the Eagles with five slams. Luz Soto added 11 digs for the Memphis-based club.
