KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Lee's volleyball team advanced to the semi-final round of the NCCAA Championship to be played on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. by defeating Bethel University 26-24. Lee will face No. 1 seed Point Loma (Calif.) in the opening match of the final four. In the other semi-final match Azusa Pacific will be pitted against Shorter University. The championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Lee, Bethel and McCurry University were deadlocked with two wins and two defeated in pool play and that forced the three-way playoff for the final spot in the semifinals.
In the victory over Bethel, Paula Martins had seven kills, six digs and two blocks. Lauren Williams added four slams and Blaire Beamer three. Camil Martinez came up with 14 assists and six digs and did Latrice Johnson.
In the opening round of a three-team playoff, the Lady Flames were pitted against McMurry and defeated the Texas squad 25-19. Bethel College (Ind.) won the bye in the three-team one-set playoff.
AZUSA PACIFIC 3, LEE 1
Azusa Pacific handed the Lee volleyball team a 3-1 (25-22, 26-28, 22-25, 21-25) defeat and forced the Lady Flames into a one-set playoff to decide who will advance to the semi-final round on Saturday.
Lee jumped out to a quick lead by winning the first set but the Cougars came clawing back and captured the next three very closely played sets.
Paula Martins continued her fine tournament performance with another double-double, 20 kills, 16 digs and three blocks. Lauren Williams followed with 13 kills and three blocks. Latrice Johnson countered with a double-double of her own, 11 kills and 11 digs.
Camil Martinez had 45 assists, nine digs and five kills. Libby Peigen and Deborah Magalhaes had 15 digs apiece.
