ROME, Ga. - With Courtney Shelton leading the way, the Lee women's golf team fought through a couple of thunderstorms and still won the annual Rome News-Tribune Invitational by 18 strokes on Tuesday at the Coosa Country Club.
"Our ladies met the challenge and battled through the conditions the entire back nine," said Lee assistant coach Chad Wilson. "After two weather delays and a tough finish, we came away with the win. We've had a lot of success here and the girls really enjoy this track. I'm proud of the way we started and held it together despite the weather."
Shelton has a habit of finishing strong, despite weather condition. She came off her 1-over 73 on Monday with a 2-over (74) in the final round and had a two-day total of 147, six strokes better than second-place finisher Trevecca's) Kaylon King (78-75 - 153) and walked away with the medalist honors.
As a team the Lady Flames posted a 305-310 - 615. Shorter University was second (633), the University of the Cumberland third (636). Lindsey-Wilson (643) and Cumberland (Tenn.) University (648) rounded out the top five finishers.
Lee's Madison Alexander (74-80 - 154) placed in a three-way tie for third with Laura Beth Harris of the Cumberlands and Maria Bengtsson of Shorter. Bernadette Little totaled (80-75 - 155) and tied for sixth with Katie Leggs of Cumberland. Sloane Skinner (78-81 - 159) tied for 14th and rounded out the Lee scores that counted in the team's final total.
Lee's Kristin Bourg (82-86 - 168) and Chelsa Rakestraw (84-81 - 165) completed the individual scores.
