LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Corey Billingsley and Jamal Worthington delivered career-highs in scoring, but it wasn't enough as the Lee University men's basketball team lost at The University of West Alabama, 85-74. The loss dropped Lee's record to 6-7 overall and 2-5 in the Gulf South Conference.
Billingsley hit 10-of-12 shots from the field, including 5-for-6 from beyond the arc, and hit all six free throws to tally 31 points. Worthington's 18 points bested the 14 markers he posted at Union University.
West Alabama (9-5, 6-2 GSC) placed five players in double-digit scoring. Jarell Byrd led the Tigers with 21 points and eight rebounds. Sandy Underwood was right behind the team lead at 20.
Lleon Tillman had 16 points to go with eight rebounds. Desmond Raymond and Jared Woolfolk added 14 and 10, respectively.
"That is one of the most athletic teams we've ever played," admitted head coach Tommy Brown. "Every mistake we made came back to hurt us. There's no margin for error when you play a team like this."
The Flames turned the ball over 12 times and forced UWA into eight mistakes of their own. The difference was that the Tigers converted Lee's turnovers into 15 points while the Flames cashed the West Alabama mistakes into just six points.
The Tigers controlled the boards and won the rebounding battle 35-25. Seventeen of UWA's rebounds were on the offensive end and lead to 20 second chance points. Lee's 10 offensive boards led to 13 second chance points.
"I thought we battled back late in the game and made them stress out a little bit," added Brown.
The Flames trailed by 20 with eight minutes remaining before eventually cutting the deficit to nine with two minutes left in the second half. Lee would not get any closer with the Flames and Tigers trading baskets the rest of the way.
Lee will look to put an end to a five-game losing streak when they travel to Huntsville on Saturday to face The University of Alabama in Huntsville. The GSC matchup is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
