LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama's Connor McDermott scored in the 80th minute to break open a scoreless battle and give the Tigers a 1-0 victory over the visiting Lee Flames in a Gulf South Conference (GSC) contest on Friday evening.
The Flames will have very little time to regroup. They will move on up to Huntsville and face ranked University of Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The loss drops the Flames to 6-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the GSC. West Alabama improves to 6-5 and 3-2 in league action.
"It was a very physical game tonight as we expected," said Lee coach Paul Furey. "We battled every minute. When we only have eight yellow cards all year and we get four in one night, we must be a long way from home," he added.
Playing a man down due to a red card, Furey noted that his Flames almost tallied the equalizer in the final two minutes. "This team has a lot of fight and a lot of heart," he concluded.
Lee had eight shots in the tough battle and placed three on goal. The Tigers took 13 shots, but only three were on target. UWA keeper Lavares Stone had three saves in gaining the win. Lee's Tom Halsall had two in defeat.
