Choctaws Defeat Flames, 4-0

Hinshaw, Furey Honored During Senior Day Ceremony

It was senior day for the Lee University men's soccer team, but Mississippi College was poised to keep the celebration to a minimum in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) match. The Choctaws (8-5-0, 3-4-0 GSC) used a goal in the first nine minutes of the match and three goals in a six-minute span early in the second half to hand the Flames (7-5-2, 2-3-1 GSC) a 4-0 defeat Sunday afternoon.

Seniors Joey Hinshaw and Justin Furey were recognized with a ceremony during the halftime break.

Stephen Roberson opened the scoring in the ninth minute. After receiving a pass from Francisco DeAnda, Roberson was one-on-one with Lee goalkeeper Tom Halsall and slipped it just under the sprawling Halsall.

Halsall allowed one goal and recorded one save before leaving the match with an injury in the 18th minute. Hinshaw faced six shots over the final 72-plus minutes, tallying three saves and three goals allowed.

Mississippi College added to its lead in the 51st minute when Roberson's cross into the box was headed into the goal by Elliot Rimmer.

Ewahia Amhanesi tallied the final two goals for the visitors. His first came in the 56th minute following a through ball by Luis Montes. Just a little over one minute later, Amhanesi struck again with an unassisted goal.

The Choctaws outshot Lee 14-8 and put eight shots on goal to the Flames' two. Humberto Pelaez stopped both shots to earn the shutout win.

The Flames will be on the road for the final four matches of the regular season. Lee travels to Memphis to face Christian Brothers University at 8 p.m. on Friday, followed by a date with Union University (Jackson, Tenn.) on Sunday.
