Volleyball Set To Tangle with Emory

Two Clubs Meet for 33rd Time Wednesday

Catherine Conley and the Lady Flames hope to serve up a winner on Wednesday night.

After racking up miles on the road last week with three conference battles the Lee volleyball team will head back to the sport court at Walker Arena to square off with NCAA Division III power Emory University on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

The two clubs are no strangers to one another. The mid-week matchup will be the 33rd meeting between the traditional volleyball powers. Lee holds an 18-14 advantage in the series overall but the Eagles got the best of the Lady Flames in the lone meeting last year in Atlanta (3-0). Lee swept the home-and-home series with the Eagles back in 2012.

WIN IN JACKSON
The Lady Flames (6-8) will look to build off the momentum of Saturday's victory over Union (Tenn.). Lee jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in the match and withstood a run by the Bulldogs to claim the five-set road victory (25-22, 25-14, 15-25, 22-25, 15-10).

Freshman Brooke Wilsman stepped up with a match-high 14 kills, including slamming home the final two points in the tiebreaking fifth set, to lead the Lady Flames to the win in Jackson. Seniors Patty Orozco (10 kills) and Lauren Williams (9 kills) also contributed on the offensive end.

On the season the Lady Flames are paced by sophomore Erin Hill with 118 kills. The Sale Creek native has done a little bit of everything however as she leads the team with 197 assists and 20 service aces. Orozco follows closely with 106 slams on the season. Haley Foote, coming off 28 assists in the victory over Union, seems to have settled into the primary setter role with 194 on the season. A pair of juniors anchor Lee's defense as Stephanie Hernandez leads the team with 196 digs while Sarah Davis has tallied 135.

EYES ON THE EAGLES
Emory enters the contest with an impressive 21-2 mark on the 2014 campaign and are riding a nine-match winning streak. The Eagles played three contests over the weekend as part of the UAA Round Robin. The Georgia-club topped Case Western Reserve (Ohio) and Rochester (N.Y.) in straight sets on Saturday before defeating Carnegie Mellon (Pa.), 3-2 on Sunday.

The Eagles are paced by senior Leah Jacobs who has amassed 323 kills to go along with 80 digs and 40 blocks. Sophomore Jessica Holler sets up the offensive with 828 assists while senior Katie Bowman anchors the back line with a team-high 360 digs.

AS GOOD AS THEY COME
When you glance at the coaching records of Lee's Andrea Hudson and Emory's Jenny McDowell you will notice that two of the top coaches in all of collegiate volleyball will be squaring off on Wednesday night.

Hudson, coaching her 24th season as leader of the Lady Flames, boasts a 756-257 record while McDowell has enjoyed similar success with a mark of 600-141 in her 19th season on the Eagles' bench. McDowell earned the milestone 600th victory on Sunday in Emory's 3-2 victory over Carnegie Mellon.
