In what always proves to be a very a special night both on and off the court the Lee volleyball team defeated Christian Brothers University, 3-1 in the annual Volley for a Cure match on Friday night in front of a packed house at Walker Arena.
The Lady Flames gave the home fans something to cheer about early and often as they stormed out of the gate with a 25-15 first set victory. Lee would go up 2-0 in set two with a 25-19 win before the Lady Bucs bounced back to avoid the sweep (25-22) in the third set.
Lee used an 8-0 run to grab a commanding lead and never looked back en route to a 25-10 drubbing of CBU in the fourth and final set to seal the victory.
The win moves the Lady Flames to 12-17 overall and 9-10 in Gulf South Conference (GSC) play. The loss drops the Memphis club to 16-13 on the year and 12-7 in conference play. The Lady Bucs will be the fifth-seed in next week's GSC tournament.
In addition to the benefit match the Lady Flames were also honoring three seniors who will play their final match tomorrow evening. Lauren Williams continued to end her career with a bang as she notched 11 kills and was literally a brick wall at the net with seven blocks, including three straight at one point in the final set.
Fellow seniors Latrice Johnson and Patty Orozco also added to the victory. Johnson had nine Kills and a team-high 19 digs while Orozco registered six slams.
"I was really glad to see our three seniors play so well tonight," said head coach Andrea Hudson. "Lauren (Williams) had a great match at the net and we really focused in practice on getting blocks from the right side and she executed that perfectly."
Sophomore Erin Hill paced the offensive attack with 16 kills for the home team while freshman Brooke Wilsman slammed 11 points home. Setter Sadie Johnson delivered 30 assists to go along with three service aces.
The Lady Bucs were led by Alexis Gillis' 10 kills. Brinsley Cooper added eight slams while Sami Gruse had 27 assists.
In between sets two and three the Lee volleyball team presented the annual Volley for a Cure scholarship to a local high school senior whose family has been personally affected by breast cancer. The eighth annual event helps to raise awareness for breast cancer and proceeds help to benefit the Mary Ellen Locher Foundation of Chattanooga.
"I'm always so impressed by the crowd on this night and the great support from the community," remarked Hudson. "Our team continues to play better and it is especially gratifying to beat a team that we lost to earlier in the season."
Lee will look to finish the season at .500 in GSC play as it wraps up the 2014 season tomorrow evening when Union University comes to town. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
