Argonauts Improve to 7-0 With 4-Set Victory Over Lady Flames

Box Score The young and inexperienced Lee volleyball team stunned a veteran and unbeaten West Florida in the first set of a Gulf South Conference match on Saturday in Walker Arena, but the Argonauts came back strong and pinned a 3-1 defeat on the Lady Flames.

The (0-3) Lee club came from behind to claim the first set 23-25, but the Pensacola team (8-0) captured the final three sets 25-13, 25-20 and 25-17. The Lady Flames will have very little time to recover from the first two rugged GSC matches; they will be pitted against North Alabama on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Walker Arena.

The versatile Erin Hill had eight kills, 18 assists, five digs and three blocks for Lee. Latrice Johnson also had eight kills .Marija Martinovic and Patty Orozco chipped in with seven kills, while libero Stephanie Hernandez helped out with a team-leading 14 digs and Sarah Davis added 12. Blaire Beamer paced Lee with four blocks and Catherine Conley followed with three. The Lady Flames could manage only a .119 hitting percentage. West Florida reached the .250 hitting mark.

The Argonauts used a deadly combination of speed, quickness and power in remaining unbeaten. Holly Mattmuller was unstoppable with 12 kills and 13 digs. She got plenty of help. Rachel Neblett who followed with 11 kills and a match-leading seven blocks. Monique StCry dished off 38 assists. Colleen Starrs paced the visitors with 17 digs and Tori Martella collected 12 digs.
