Junior Kayla Beavers drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to help complete an amazing 70-69 comeback victory for the Lee women's basketball team over the University of West Georgia on Saturday afternoon in Walker Arena.
The Lady Flames trailed for much of the contest and found themselves staring down a 66-59 deficit with just under a minute left in the contest. The comeback effort was jumped started by freshman Shelby Brown who scored six of her 10 points in the final moments. Senior point guard Alex Swope added a timely layup and the Wolves missed four foul shots to open the door for the game-winner by Beavers.
Lee pulled out the improbable victory while playing the final two minutes without any timeouts remaining.
"I thought we showed a lot of guts down the stretch," said head coach Marty Rowe. "Our players listened to the coaches and made several good decisions. Alex's layup was huge in the final minute and on the last play we told her to go right at them and if they guarded her to kick it to KB (Beavers) for the win and that's exactly what she did."
There was no doubt in Rowe's mind that the shot was going in, "The only thing I was worried about was if she was going to get it off in time. As soon as it left her hands on I knew it was in."
Beavers finished with 13 points, swiped three steals and canned three treys. Swope scored four points but made her presence felt with eight assists. Erin Walsh led the Lady Flames with 15 points while Christina Johnson tallied a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
"Alex is a competitor who can't stand to lose even in practice," added Rowe. "She finds the right people in key situations and she is playing like the type of player we knew she could be when we recruited her last year. I also thought Rebecca Jameson played great at the top of the zone for us and Christina's double-double and timely 3-pointer really jump started our comeback."
The Lady Flames trailed 32-23 at halftime and saw the Wolves' lead balloon to 18 with 16:59 remaining in the game before going on a 12-3 run to pull within nine at the 13:31 mark.
Lee won the rebounding battle by a 45-36 margin. Both clubs struggled with turnovers as Lee committed 22 while forcing the Wolves into 19 floor mistakes.
Rowe's club finished 25-of-66 (37.9 percent) from the field but converted 10 triples to stay in the contest. West Georgia hit 20-of-48 (41.7 percent) overall but only made three baskets from behind the arc. The Wolves shot themselves in the foot at the charity stripe as they cashed in just 26 of 40 attempts (65 percent) including key misses in the final minute.
West Georgia was led by Taylor Beverly's double-double performance of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Katrina Littlepage added 16 points and dished off four assists while Seandre Lee tallied 14 markers and pulled down six boards.
The victory moves the Lady Flames to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in Gulf South Conference action. West Georgia falls to 7-5 on the year and is now 2-4 in league play.
Lee will get right back to work on Monday evening as they welcome GSC rival West Alabama to Walker Arena for a 6 p.m. tip. The Lady Flames swept the season series from the Tigers last year.
