CLINTON, Miss. – Goals by David Perez and Gabe Franco helped to lead the Lee men's soccer team to a 2-1 road victory over Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon.
The 15th-ranked Flames claimed their third straight Gulf South Conference (GSC) win and have not lost since Sept. 11 overall. Lee improves to 5-0-1 in league play and 10-2-2 overall. The Choctaws fall to 3-9-1 on the year and 1-5-1 in the GSC.
Perez continued his sizzling 2015 with campaign with his 15th goal of the season at the 27:44 mark. Jon Finlay was credit with the assist after delivering the ball to the golden boot of Perez. The junior has now scored six goals in his last three matches, including a hat trick in Friday's victory over Delta State.
"Not sure what else I can say about DP (David Perez), he's a special player having a special season," said head coach Paul Furey.
Lee would extend the advantage to two just three minutes later as team captain Gabe Franco connected for his second goal of the season. The senior defender scored off of a penalty kick.
Conor Corboy got Mississippi College within one on goal early in the second period (52:21) but the Choctaws would not get any closer.
"This was really a tough road win for us. Every game is big at this point but we beat a pretty talented team at their place and that's huge," Furey said.
Lee sophomore keeper Jake Huffaker got his first start of the season and made it count, recording one save while allowing just the one goal. Humberto Pelaez tallied two saves for the home team.
"Jake (Huffaker) stepped in and did a great job of getting his first collegiate win in goal," added Furey. "He's worked hard for two years with our goalkeeping coach and that paid off today."
The shot count was slightly in the Flames favor at 10-8. Lee placed four shots on goal and connected on two while Mississippi College had two shots on frame.
Furey's club currently sits in third place in the conference standings but remain the only unbeaten team in the GSC. West Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville place ahead of the Flames but have played two more matches so far.
"This was a solid weekend for us on the road but we know there is more business to take care of; just delighted to be at home for our final stretch of games," concluded Furey.
Lee will now get set for a showdown with Christian Brothers on Friday evening at the Lee Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Bucs are 10-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play coming off their conference bye week this past weekend.
