Men's Basketball Set to Tip Off 2015-16

Flames Open Against Two SIAC Clubs

Newcomer Keevin Tyus excited the home crowd in two exhibition contests last week.

The Lee men's basketball will return to Carrollton, Ga. and the University of West Georgia this weekend to take part in the West Georgia Classic for the second straight year.

A pair of NCAA Division II schools from the SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) will serve as the opponents. The Flames will face Miles College (Atlanta) on Saturday at 5:30 and test Lane College (Jackson, Tenn.) on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Miles will be returning from a long road trip to New Orleans and games against Xavier and Southern universities. Both contests were close against the NAIA powers, but Miles lost to Southern in overtime and to Xavier by 11 points.

"We are still trying to gather information on Miles and Lane." said Lee head coach Tommy Brown when asked about his official start to the 2015-16 season. "We don't know a ton. We do know there aren't any bad Division II teams out there, so we will have to play well to win."

Joshua Sammuels and Gerald Maddox were the leading scorers in Miles' two games in New Orleans, but it appears they have a solid support staff.

The Flames have also played a pair of exhibition games, winning over Bryan and Martin Methodist. Coach Brown got an opportunity to look at several different rotations in each game, but admits to still having problems deciding which players will be a part of his regular rotation.

Keevin Tyus has been consistent in both exhibitions. He scored 15 against Bryan and tallied nine points and grabbed eight rebounds against Martin Methodist. Post player "Rant" Gilbert had 10 markers against Bryan and thrilled the crowd with a pair of slam dunks. Also against Bryan, Kenny Nabors had four 3s, CJ Reese 14 points, Elgrin Wilson 10 and Jervon Johnson 13.

"I was pleased with the exhibitions overall," noted Brown. "It's still impossible to know who our top seven or eight guys are." The coach did add that he expects Chase Cullen to play this weekend, but point guard Rico Overall will be out at least another week.

The Flames will return to Walker Arena a week from Saturday and play host to Carver College at 7 p.m.
