FLORENCE, Ala. – The Lee women's basketball team started out fast and never looked back cruising to a 83-54 victory at North Alabama on Thursday evening.
Erin Walsh paced the effort for the Lady Flames with 24 points. The sophomore hit 10 of 16 from the field and canned two triples. Walsh is averaging 15.8 points per game to lead the team. Carrie Cheeks posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds despite just playing 14 minutes due to foul trouble. Cheeks grabbed nine of her 13 boards in the first period alone.
"At the end of the game we got some good minutes out of our bench and got out of here healthy and with a road win," said head coach Marty Rowe.
As a team the Lady Flames shot a sizzling 50.8 percent from the field (33 of 65). The Lee defense stifled the Lions all game long and limited the home team to just 19.4 percent shooting from the field (12 of 62). The Lions hit 10 3-pointers and converted just four points inside the paint in the contest.
Lee outscored North Alabama by an incredible 42-4 margin inside the paint while the Lady Flames dominated on the glass as well, outrebounding the Lions, 54-36.
Christina Johnson tallied 13 markers on 6 of 9 shooting from the field to go along with nine rebounds. Johnson leads the team with 97 rebounds on the year. Shelby Brown made it four players in double figures with 11 points.
"Erin was really good tonight. She finds so many different ways to score and when she does that she brings a completely different dimension to our team," added Rowe. "Shelby also gave us good minutes despite not feeling well today."
Katelyn Nunley led the Lions in scoring with 15 points and added 11 rebounds. Nunley did most of her damage at the free throw line, converting 13 of 18. Katelyn Kostelc nailed four treys to account for her 12 points.
Lee improves to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the GSC after winning its third straight contest. The Lions fall to 2-8 on the year and 1-4 in league play. Thursday marked the first road win for the Lady Flames at North Alabama. The past two seasons the home team has won each contest.
Lee will continue the road trip on Saturday as it battles Alabama-Huntsville at 3 p.m. The Chargers dropped to 3-2 in the GSC on Thursday with a 60-47 home loss to Shorter.
"We're going to have play really well against Huntsville on Saturday. We know they are going to be really motivated coming off a loss," conclude Rowe.
