Lady Flames Fall At No. 10 Union

Lady Bulldogs Remain Unbeaten With 69-57 Win Over Lee

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Lee women's basketball team fell to the No. 10 Union Lady Bulldogs, 69-57 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Flames fall to 4-3 on the year and an even 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play. Union remains unbeaten at 8-0 and are now 2-0 in league play.

Despite limiting the usually sizzling 3-point shooting of the Lady Bulldogs to just 2 of 8 (25 percent) Lee struggled to convert shots of its own, particularly in the paint. The Lady Flames were outscored 30-16 inside and shot 31.3 percent (21 of 67) from the field. Union hit 44 percent (21 of 48) of their shots.

Lee was led by sophomore Erin Walsh with 18 points. Walsh leads the team in scoring averaging 13.4 per contest. Senior Kayla Beavers added 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting from 3-point distance. Freshman Haris Price chipped eight points and dished off five assists. Senior Christina Johnson once again paced the rebounding effort with 11 boards.

"We have to do a better job of executing and finishing off plays," said head coach Marty Rowe. "The effort tonight was fantastic, this is the hardest we've played all year. But when you're facing a good team on the road it's not enough to just play hard we have to execute better."

Tiara Caldwell posted a double-double for Union with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Bethany Lytle followed with 15 points.

"We didn't do a very good job with the things we pride ourselves on tonight," said Rowe. "We didn't rebound the basketball and we missed some opportunities on some plays in the post. When you limit a great shooting team like Union to just two 3-pointers and 69 points, even after fouling to extend the game, you expect to win."

The Lady Bulldogs came in to the contest averaging 84 points per game while giving up just 54.

Union held a 43-34 advantage on the glass while Lee forced 17 turnovers and were guilty of 15 floor mistakes.

The Lady Flames will head back to Walker Arena on Thursday to host Valdosta State at 6 p.m. in the GSC home opener. Lee will entertain West Florida on Saturday at 2 p.m.

"We are facing the top three teams right out of the gate in the league on paper," added Rowe. "Valdosta State and West Florida are probably the two most physical teams in the conference so we will have our work cut out for us."
