CARROLLTON, Ga. – After making quick work of West Georgia in game one of Saturday's doubleheader the Lee softball team suffered a setback in the nightcap falling to the Wolves, 5-4.
The Lady Flames are now 10-8 overall and drop to 2-6 in league play. West Georgia wins the series and improves to 9-10 and 4-5 in conference play.Â
Lee will get back to work on Tuesday when it hosts Tennessee Temple in a non-conference doubleheader from Butler Field beginning at 2 p.m.
Game 2 - LU 4, UWG 5 West Georgia overcame four errors and used a four-run fifth to earn the 5-4 victory over Lee in Game two of Saturday's twin bill.
Three straight run-scoring singles did in Leigh Beatenbough (4-4) and the Lady Flames in the bottom of the fifth. Katie Spinks got things going with a two-run base knock for the Wolves. Molly Uhrman and Meagen Coddington followed with run-scoring singles to turn a 3-1 Lee advantage to a 5-3 lead.
Beatenbough worked five innings for the Lady Flames and surrendered five runs on seven hits. The fresman walked three and struck out four. Game one winner Angie Hughes tossed a scoreless inning in relief. Hughes did not allow a base runner and struck out one.
Lexie Dean led the nine-hit attack with three singles in four at bats. Emily  Dagnan, Kaylee Drew and Amanda Lynn all singled and scored in the contest. NiaRaye Ceasar walked twice and drove in a run on basesloaded walk in the third.
Katie Turner (1-1) went the distance for the Wolves. She allowed nine hits and four runs but only one was earned. Turner walked two and had one punch out.
The Lady Flames rallied in the seventh inning scoring once. Dagnan came all the way home from first after a Drew single on a throwing error by the Wolves. Drew advanced all the way to third on the play but was left stranded.
Game 1 - LU 10, UWG 0 Dominique Hannah smashed her second grand slam of the season and Angie Hughes dazzled in the circle to help the Lee softball team roll past West Georgia, 10-0 in game one of Saturday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader.
The Lady Flames opened things up in the top of the second scoring six runs to take a commanding advantage. Lee took full advantage of a two-out Wolves' error. Brooke Bailey reached on a drop fly ball allowing two runs to score.
After the deflating error, Hannah delivered the big blow as she cleared the bases with a grand slam to right center. The senior slugger finished 2-for-3 and is leading the team wiht a sizzling .464 average with 28 RBI.
NiaRaye Ceasar extended the margin to seven as she launched a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall. Lee tacked on another unearned run later in the third inning.
The Lady Flames' offense added two more runs in the fourth inning. Bailey delivered a run-scoring single to left and Amanda Lynn registered a RBI infield single to stretch the margin to 10.
Angie Hughes (6-3) allowed just one hit and struck out 11 batters to earn the victory for the Lady Flames. Molly Uhrman broke up the no-hit bid with a single in the fifth inning. Hughes would have to tip-toe around eight walks however in preserving the shutout victory.
Danielle Easterly (5-5) worked two-plus innings for the West Georgia club and allowed five hits and seven runs but only one was earned. Katie Shultes came on in relief and worked three innings giving up six hits and three runs (two earned). Three Wolves' errors led to seven unearned runs.
Saturday's opener marked the fifth run-rule victory of the season for the Lady Flames and their first in conference play
FRIDAY - LU 5, UWG 6 The University of West Georgia jumped out to a 6-1 advantage and turned back a late Lee University rally to win, 6-5 in the series opener between the two Gulf South Conference foes on Friday evening.
With one out in the top of the seventh the Lady Flames threatened to tie things up after first baseman Lexie Dean singled and advanced to second on a Wolves' error. Lee would be unable to bring her home however as reliever Katie Shultes wriggled out of the jam to earn her third save of the season.
After giving up four runs in the bottom of the fourth the Lady Flames responded with a four spot of their own in the fifth frame. After two quick outs, Amanda Lynn walked and scored on Dean's double to left center.
Dominique Hannah followed with a run-scoring single and after a walk and pitching change Kaylie Drew completed the scoring with a two-run double down the right field line.
Leigh Beatenbough (3-4) was tagged with the loss for Lee. The freshman worked 3 1/3 innings and gave up six runs but just two were earned. She yielded four hits and struck out a batter.
Angie Hughes pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and kept the Lady Flames within striking distance by giving up just one hit while striking out four.
Amanda Voyles led the Wolves in hitting with two RBI. Randi Phillips added a double and Heather Sexton tripled. The home team managed just five hits but made the most of three Lee errors.
Dominique Easterly was credited with the win for the Wolves after going 4 2/3 innings and giving up five runs (four earned). Easterly struck out three but struggled with her command giving up four walks.
The loss drops the Lady Flames to 9-7 on the year and 1-5 in the GSC. The victory propels West Georgia 8-9 overall and 3-4 in league play.
The two clubs will wrap up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon. Lee won the season series last year after taking 2-of-3 from the Wolves at Butler Field.
