Lawson, Hill Solve Magicians

Flames Sweep Doubleheader, 4-1 and 8-0

Dustin Lawson and Trenton Hill carried perfect games through four innings to lead the Lee University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting LeMoyne-Owen College. The Flames (5-0) won the opener 4-1 and followed that with an 8-0 blanking of the Magicians (0-4). The finale of the three-game series is slated for 2 p.m. on Sunday.

"We need to come out and have good energy and focus tomorrow," said Lee head coach Mark Brew. "It's our final game to prepare for our conference opener and it's another opportunity for us to improve as a team. We need Chevis (Hoover) to set the tone early on the mound for us (on Sunday)."
Hill not only kept LeMoyne-Owen hitters of the base paths, he finished the day 3-for-8 with a double, triple and four RBI.

Hill pitched four perfect innings and delivered a two-run triple in the first inning to spark the Flames to the shutout win. The junior transfer from Maple Woods Community College struck out eight of the 12 batters he faced to pick up his second win of the season.

"Once again our starting pitching was off the charts," said Brew. "Trent Hill was as good as you can be this early and, though I hated removing him in the fifth with the perfect game, we really need to get more arms on the field this time of the year."

Dakota Fowler and Grayson Bailey threw the final three innings to complete the shutout. Fowler gave up one hit and struck out three in two innings, while Bailey struck out three of the four batters he faced.

Siosi Poti was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game. Zack Zyburt and Shae Durham also delivered two hits. Zyburt drove in one run and Cameron Scott recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Robert Sheard was charged with the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up five hits and walked five.

Lawson didn't allow a baserunner until there was one out in the fifth inning. The Magicians delivered two groundballs through the infield and later cracked the scoreboard following two Lee errors to take a 1-0 lead.

The senior was tagged for just one more hit over the next inning to finish with three hits, one unearned run and eight strikeouts in six innings of work.

Kyle Briner pitched the seventh inning to record his second save of the season. The junior surrendered one hit and fanned one batter.

Hoover led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and moved to third on a double by Andres Nelo. Hill would then deliver his first of two big hits of the day with a two-run double.

The Flames added two insurance runs in the sixth inning with Shae Durham laying down a safety squeeze to plate MJ Brown and Poti singling in Travis Perkola.

"Lawson once again set the tone and threw a phenomenal game. Briner did an excellent job finishing. We struggled offensively, but give their pitcher credit. He frustrated us for most of the game. I really thought Nelo had a good game. Hoover had a big swing in the fifth inning to get us started offensively," added Brew.

Dexwin Thompson gave up two earned runs and nine hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out three in the loss.
