ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A seven-run third inning was more than enough for starter Angie Hughes as the Lee softball team throttled Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Fla.), 10-0 in the finale of the Flagler College Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The win moves the Lady Flames to 5-1. Coach Emily Russell's club will get right back to work on Tuesday as they travel to King College for a doubleheader with the Tornadoes beginning at 2 p.m. Lee returns home on Wednesday to host crosstown rival Tennessee Wesleyan at 2 p.m.
LU 10, ERAU 0 (Game Two) Hughes (3-1) gave up just one hit over four shutout innings to help the Lady Flames roll past Embry-Riddle, 10-0 and rebound from a loss to Flagler College earlier in the day.
The hard-throwing junior was dominate in the circle and did not allow a hit till the third inning. Hughes finished with four punch outs and yielded just one free pass. Brianna Eichbaum worked a scoreless inning in relief and struck out a batter.
The Lady Flames offense came to life in the third inning. Lexie Dean got things started with a run scoring single. Dominique Hannah, Emily Dagnan and NiaRaye Ceasar all followed suite with RBI singles of their own to help give Lee a 5-0 advantage. Dagnan's single scored two thanks to an Eagles' error.
Junior-transfer Kaylie Drew capped the rally with a two-run bomb down the left field line for her first home run as a Lady Flame.
Dagnan helped put the game away early in the bottom of the fourth as she unloaded her second home run of the year, a three-run shot to left to extend the lead to 10-0. The hard hitting catcher finished with two hits and four RBI.
Robi Zimmerman (0-1) worked all four innings in the circle for the Eagles. She was touched up for 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits.
The Eagles avoided the no-hitter thanks to a Raquelli Bianco double in the third inning.
The Lady Flames have now four of the first six games by run-rule. Lee has outscored its opponents 74-6 to start the season.
LU 5, FC 6 (Game One) It took 23 innings but the Lee softball team finally allowed a run in the 2015 season as Flagler College rallied from a five-run deficit to hand the Lady Flames their first loss of the year in a 6-5 nine-inning affair on Sunday morning.
Lexie Dean led Lee with three hits and drove in two runs. Speedster Amanda Lynn roped a pair of singles and scored twice. Centerfielder Rachel Polacek also had two hits and scored a run as the Lady Flames turned three Flagler errors into five unearned runs in the third and fourth innings.
Freshman Leigh Beatenbough started for the Lady Flames. Beatenbough worked five innings and gave up four runs on six hits. She walked four and struck out two. Angie Hughes (2-1) came on in relief and was tagged with the loss after giving up two unearned runs.
Flagler's Tori Volz scored on a passed ball in the sixth inning to tie things up at five. Maddy Murphy ended the game with a RBI double in the ninth.
The Saints jumped back into the contest with a three-run fifth. Kayla Fuller, Murphy and Mallory Allen each singled home runs to bring the home team within one. Fuller jump started the offense with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth.
Tinsley Smith (1-0) was credited with the win in the circle for the Saints. Smith went the full nine innings giving up five unearned runs on 10 hits. She struck out three and walked two.
