CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Patric Hynes era began Sunday for the Lee University tennis teams with a meeting with nationally-ranked Valdosta State University. The Gulf South Conference (GSC) matches were hosted by University of West Georgia at the Sunset Hills Country Club. The Lady Flames fell 7-2 to the 15^th-ranked Lady Blazers and the Flames were blanked 9-0 by the Blazers (No. 10).

"The effort was there from both our teams today," said Hynes. "Our girls were tight and anxious and were very disappointed with the results, but that is good and is something we can use to build on. Our guys played with two of our top players out of the line-up."

The Lady Flames (0-1, 0-1 GSC) picked up default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Valdosta State (2-1, 2-0 GSC) carried a 2-1 lead after Tonya McGraner and Maclain Yowarsky were defeated by Jennifer Rink and Anke Poncelet, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles; and Krista Good and Marta Garcia-Nieto lost 8-2 to Bea Morales Hernandez and Joanna Lario.

Lee won 16 games in the five played singles matches. Good took Taylor Vinge to the edge before falling short by a 6-4 margin in both sets. Yowarsky and Jodie Rice each tallied three game victories, while McGraner had two.

The Flames (0-1, 0-1 GSC) found the going tough against the perennial GSC power. VSU (1-0, 1-0 GSC) won two of the three doubles matches by 8-0 scores. Westley Lemke and Mike Herrelle were beaten, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles by Francisco Yim Kim and Niklas Herbring.

The Blazers won all six singles matches in straight sets. In five of the six matches, VSU did not drop more than two games. Daniel Hardesty lost his opening set 6-1 and progressed to lessen the margin with a 6-3 mark in the second set.

The two squads open the home portion of their schedules on Saturday against Martin Methodist College. The non-conference matchups are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
