History
An impressive six game winning streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon for the Lee softball team as rival Shorter University held off the Lady Flames, 3-1Â to wrap up the weekend series.
Maddie Bray (7-4) rebounded from blowing a late lead in yesterday's contest and pitched a complete game to guide the Lady Hawks to victory. Bray allowed just five hits and one run. She did not walk a batter and recorded four punch outs.
Leigh Beatenbough (6-7) was the tough-luck loser in the circle for the Lady Flames. The freshman also went the full seven innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Beatenbough did not give up a walk and struck out a pair.
After both pitchers dazzled through the first four innings it was the fifth inning that gave Shorter a lead it would not surrender. Kam Carter launched a solo homer to right to break the scoreless tie. Janell Echols followed later in the frame with a two-out run-scoring single.
Shorter's Paige Rowland added an insurance run in the seventh with a solo shot to right off of Beatenbough. The Lady Hawks made the most of their four hits as three of those hits scored runs.
Lee's lone run was provided off the bat of junior Nia Ceasar. The second baseman hit a 3-0 laser that just cleared the left field wall. After a Beatenbough single the Lady Flames brought the tying run to the plate but couldn't finish off the comeback effort.
Pitching held strong throughout the weekend as the two clubs combined for just 16 runs in the three games.
The win helped Shorter salvage the final game of the weekend series as Lee swept both games of Saturday's doubleheader. The game one victory was head coach Emily Russell's milestone 500
th victory since taking over the Lee program in 2003. Â
The Lady Flames (18-11, 9-8) will look to start a new winning streak on Wednesday as they step outside of the Gulf South Conference to host Trevecca Nazarene at 3 p.m. Shorter (20-8, 10-8) will travel to Mississippi College for a three-game conference series on Saturday.
