Softball Completes Series Sweep

Lady Flames Top West Florida, 2-1 in Sunday's Finale

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Thanks to a two-run homer by Kaylie Drew and quality pitching the Lee softball team completed a three-game sweep of West Florida with a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon in the Gulf South series finale.

Drew, a junior-transfer from Fallbrook, Calif., put the Lady Flames on top in the sixth inning as she launched her team-leading ninth home run over the left field wall to score Dominique Hannah with two outs in the frame.

Leigh Beatenbough and Angie Hughes combined efforts in the circle to help Lee pull out the victory. Beatenbough started and pitched five strong innings to earn her ninth victory of the season, allowing just three hits and one run to go along with six strikeouts.

Junior Angie Hughes earned her second save of the season throwing two scoreless innings in relief to close out the one-run victory. Hughes struck out three and walked one.

The Argonauts got on the board first on a run-scoring by Lauren Register in the bottom of the fourth. Jenna Belser and Bianca Lopez were the only other players to record hits in the contest.

Becca Taylor was the tough-luck loser for West Florida. Taylor tossed all seven innings and gave up just two runs on six hits. She did not walk a batter and recorded six strikeouts.

Hannah doubled, singled and scored a run in three at bats or the Lady Flames. Junior catcher Emily Dagnan also had a pair of hits. NiaRaye Ceasar singled to round out the Lee offensive effort.

The Lady Flames improve 22-12 on the season and 12-8 in conference play. Head coach Emily Russell's club has now won four-straight GSC series and are 12-4 over its last 16 games. West Florida falls to 10-23 on the season and just 5-15 in league play.

Lee will gear up for a busy week of action from Butler Field. The Lady Flames host a doubleheader with Tennessee Temple on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before welcoming conference foe Delta State to town on Friday (2 p.m.).
