Five Lee players reached double-figure scoring and five others got into the scoring column as the Lady Flames advanced to the final round of the NCCAA Mid-East Region with an overwhelming 102-49 victory over Hiwassee College.
Tennessee Temple earned the right to face the Lady Flames in the championship game in Walker Arena on Friday at 6 p.m. by edging Bluefield College 65-64. A. Foster paced the Lady Crusaders with 16 points and K. Purvis added 14.
Shelby Brown paced the scoring with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Carrie Cheeks followed closely with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kayla Beavers hit 4-of-7 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds in finishing with 16 points.
Lee out-rebounded the Lady Tigers by 20 (55-35). Christina Johnson tied Brown for top rebounding honors when she garnered eight to go along with her 12 points. Erin Walsh knocked down three treys in six attempts and completed the double-figure scoring with 11 points.
Alex Swope set up her teammates with 11 assists. She also totaled five points and grabbed five boards. Rebecca Jameson came off the bench to add eight points to the winning total and collect six rebounds.
The Lady Flames zipped to a 55-15 lead by halftime and were never threatened the entire contest as they reached the century mark for the second time this season against Hiwassee. For the game, Lee shot 59 percent making 38-of-65 field goal attempts. Lee also knocked down 13-of-28 treys (43 percent) but struggled at the free-throw line making just 13-23.
Hiwassee got a strong effort from Haylee Morrow (16 points). She made 9-of-10 free-throws. Dominique Stringer followed right behind with 15 points. Takyah Gilmore produced a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. The Lee defense held the Lady Tigers to only 33 percent shooting from the field. Hiwassee attempted 19 3-pointers and made just one. The Lady Tigers were awarded 25 free throws and converted 18. Both teams were guilty of 18 turnovers.
The victory gives the Lady Flames a 19-8 record moving into the championship game. Hiwassee's season ends with a 14-19 record.
