Baseball Sweeps North Alabama

Pitching, Key Home Run Sparks 3-1 Victory Over Lions

FLORENCE, Ala. - MJ Brown delivered a long three-run homer and Lee pitching came up big again as the Flames completed a three-game sweep on the University of North Alabama (UNA) with a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Mike Land Park. It marked Lee's first series sweep on the road against a Gulf South Conference opponent.

"Pitching was name of the game this weekend for us," comments the Flames pleased skipper Mark Brew. "To allow only two runs over three games on the road against a quality opponent like UNA speaks volumes of what our pitching staff did for us this weekend. We also got some huge timely hits that allowed us to get enough done at the plate and we were excellent defensively all weekend. Hopefully, the momentum from this weekend can carry us moving forward."

Lee scored all three of its runs in the second inning. Ben Holland started the rally with a single. Trent Hill was hit by a pitch. With one out Brown delivered what coach Brew called "one of the longest home runs I have seen and it obviously was a huge factor in the game." Three pitchers were successful in limiting the Lions to seven hits. More importantly they gave up only one walk, an area the Flames had struggled in most of the season.

Jacob Potts (3-3) started and got credit for the win. He hurled five innings of six-hit ball, allowing North Alabama's only run. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Lefty Grayson Bailey gave the Flames three excellent innings of relief work. He surrendered one hit and collected five strikeouts. Ridge Ackerman entered in the ninth. He picked up his fourth save and fanned two of the four hitters he faced.

"Potts, Bailey and Ackerman were very good," stressed Brew. "They all commanded the strike zone and made big pitches all day." Kyle Conkle worked six innings and took the pitching loss for the Lions. All three of Lee's runs were earned.

Luke Toms and Josh Tate had Lee's other hits as they made the best of just four hits of Conkle in the win. Dylan Calhoun had two doubles and Dylan Boston also had a two-base hit for the losers.

The Flames improved to 23-15-1 overall and 13-12-1 in the GSC standings. North Alabama slipped to 23-13 and 11-12 in league play.

Lee will travel to Nashville on Tuesday (7 p.m.) and face an old TranSouth Conference rival in Trevecca Nazarene. The Flames will return to Olympic Field on Saturday and host Valdosta State in a GSC doubleheader. It will be Military Appreciation Day and the opening pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
