MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Solid pitching in game one and timely hitting in game two propelled the Lee softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Christian Brothers on Sunday afternoon from Bland Field.
The Lady Flames won the opener 5-1 and bounced back with a four-run sixth to claim an 11-8 victory in the nightcap. The sweep ends Lee's regular season with a 31-17 record and an 18-11 mark in league play. CBU finish its year at 10-49 overall and 3-26 in the Gulf South.
The Lady Flames will now gear up for postseason as play as they host the NCCAA Mid-East Region tournament on May 7-8 at Butler Field.
GAME TWO – LU 11, CBU 8 The Lady Flames scored 10 unanswered runs to rebound from an 8-1 deficit in game two. Lee scored six runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to secure the doubleheader sweep of CBU.
Lexie Dean led the way with two doubles and two singles as Lee smacked 16 hits and 11 runs off of the Lady Bucs in game two.
Dominique Hannah followed with two hits and drove in a pair while Kaylie Drew and NiaRaye Ceasar each had three hits. Drew doubled twice and had two RBI while Ceasar doubled and plated three runs.
Angie Hughes pitched all seven innings for the victory. Hughes worked around five Lee errors as only three of the eight runs she allowed were earned. The junior walked four and struck out five batters.
The Lady Bucs were paced by Holly Oyhenart, Jennifer Gonzalez and Ali Hare who each had two hits. Gonzalez scored twice while Hare drove in three runs for the home team.
Kasey Beekman was tagged with the loss for Christian Brothers. Beekman went 3 1/3 innings allowing six runs on nine hits. Hare tossed three innings and gave up four hits and three runs. Gonzalez came on for 2/3 innings of relief and allowed a pair of runs on three hits while walking two.
GAME ONE - LU 5, CBU 1 Freshman Leigh Beatenbough (12-7) tossed a complete game gem allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight as the Lady Flames were victorious in game one on Sunday.
The Lady Flames took an early 1-0 lead as Dominique Hannah scored on a Lady Bucs' throwing error.
Gonzalez knotted things up for Christian Brothers at 1-1 with an RBI groundout but Beatenbough would not allow anything else as she dazzled in the circle for head coach Emily Russell and Lee.
With things tied going into the fifth frame the Lady Flames put the came out of reach with four runs. Qiley Lewis scored when Lexie Dean reached on error. The big blow came courtesy of slugger Kaylie Drew who followed with a three-run bomb to extend the lead to 5-1. Drew leads the team with 16 homers and 54 RBI.
Lauren Provence had two hits for CBU and Ali Hare provided the other base hit for the visitors.
Amanda Lynn, Lewis and Hannah each had two singles to pace the Lady Flames' eight hit effort. Lynn swiped her 31st bag of the season and has only been caught five times.
