Childers Sets 5K School Record

Five Personal Records Fall At Roanoke College-Virginia Tech Twilight Qualifier

Camden Perez set a personal record with a time of 15:25.73 in the 5000 meter run.

SALEM, Va. -- The Lee University track and field team posted quality finishes at the Roanoke College-Virginia Tech Twilight Qualifier meet hosted by Roanoke College to close out the 2015 season.

"This was a quick turn around for us after nationals," said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. "We only brought seven athletes with the hope of getting a few personal records."

You could say the trip was successful with five personal records, including a school record, being set.

Jessica Childers set a personal best in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:13.98. Childers followed that up setting a 5k school record by 29 seconds after crossing the finish line at 17:38.31. The record had been held by Maggie Opelt since 2010 and was our oldest school track record.

"Jessica ran very even splits and looked very relaxed," added Mogan. "This has been a breakthrough year for her, running personal records at every distance."

Audrey Smith made the Lady Flames 3-for-3 in their attempts to set personal records. Smith ran a personal record 4:55.19 in the 1500 meter run.

Camden Perez and Terris Elliott were the final two Lee runners to set new personal marks. Perez took on the 5000 meter run and finished at 15:25.73. Elliott moved his personal mark in the 800 meter run to 1:54.54.

Joining Elliott in the 800 meter run were Emmanuel Kipchumba (1:53.65), Harold Smith (1:55.39) and Adam Gullette (2:03.58). Elliott also ran in the 1500 meter event and recorded a time of 4:21.03.

"Our athletes will enjoy a well-deserved month off from training before gearing up for the cross country season," concluded Morgan.
