Flames Win OT Thriller

Perez, Marinell Propel Lee to 3-2 Victory

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The old adage in sports, "It's never over till it's over," rang true on Wednesday evening as the Lee men's soccer team scored a dramatic overtime victory over the University of Montevallo, 3-2  in a road non-conference tilt.

Trailing 3-2 in the 89th minute it was sophomore Quade Marinell who broke the hearts of the home crowd as he scored on a free kick from the top of the box to send the match into overtime. The junior forward now has three goals on the young season.

In the extra period it was David Perez striking off a corner kick to send the Flames home with the victory just five minutes into the extra time. Lee now moves to 3-2 on the year. The loss drops Montevallo to 2-3.

"I was really proud of our spirit tonight. to allow two somewhat soft goals in the final 10 minutes could have been devastating. But we kept battling and Quade hit a great free kick with two minutes to go," said head coach Paul Furey. "We had the momentum shift back our way and five minutes into OT we get the winner on DP's (David Perez) corner kick."

Lee jumped on the board early as freshman Danny Johnston scored his first career goal in the eighth minute. Montevallo would even things up at the 31:38 mark on a goal from Kevin Francis.

"Danny got his first collegiate goal tonight but he has been well beyond his years as a freshman. I'm happy for him," noted Furey.

Perez would give the Flames a 2-1 advantage at the break as he scored the first of his two goals in the 40th minute off a pass from Jon Finlay.

The Flames would hold on to the 2-1 lead for most of the second period before the home team thundered back, scoring twice in a manner of two minutes late in the contest. Joel Charles tied thing up at the 82:35 mark and Srdjan Dujkovic gave the Falcons the brief advantage in the 85th minute just prior to Marinell's heroics.

"We played well but made it difficult for ourselves with some uncharacteristic mistakes that led to their goals," added Furey. "They are a good team and play hard. This was a nice road victory for us."

The Flames recorded 14 shots and placed seven on target. The Falcons took 15 shots and made the most of them with 11 on goal. Lee earned seven corner kicks compared to four for the Peachbelt Conference club.

Lee keeper Tom Halsall registered eight saves in the win while Montevallo's Yannic Horn had three saves in defeat.

The Flames will return home to battle Oakland City on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. During halftime of the contest the men will be presented their championship rings after last year's run to the NCCAA title.
