DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Two second half goals propelled the Lee men's soccer team to a 3-2 road victory over the University of North Georgia on Tuesday evening.
The Flames scored their third straight victory and improved to 5-2 on the year. Lee will face one more non-conference opponent when they host Bryan College on Thursday at 7 p.m. before entering Gulf South Conference play.
Senior forward Travis Kiger got the Flames on the board in the 10
th minute as he connected on a pass from David Perez. Kiger scored for the second straight match and now has two goals on the year. "DP (David Perez) continues to provide big goals for us," said Lee head coach Paul Furey. "We got off the a great start with Travis' goal, but we need to stop conceding soft goals and letting teams back in the match."
The Nighthawks would respond with goals at the 19:35 mark and 25:38 in the opening period. Daniel Joyce knotted things up at 1-1 before Eddie Hurst would give the home team a 2-1 lead off a pass from Carl Ludwig Eriksson.
The second half belonged to the Flames. David Perez registered his team-leading seventh goal of the year as he blasted home a shot from 25 yards out. Quade Marinell was credited with the assist. This past week Perez was named the GSC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks of voting.
Freshman Jose Orellana picked a perfect time to claim his first collegiate goal as he gave Lee the lead for good in the 67
th minute. "Jose's first collegiate was a big game-winner for us," noted Furey.
Lee totaled 12 shots in the match while North Georgia registered 15. The Flames placed seven on goal compared to just four for the Nighthawks. Lee earned five corner kicks, all coming in the second half while UNG had four in each period.
Lee keeper Tom Halsall earned his fifth win of the season, allowing two goals to go along with one save. Diego Casillas manned the net for North Georgia and recorded three saves in the loss.
"This game just reminded me of how tough Division II can be," explained Furey after the win. "Every night can be a battle. I'm glad we figured a way to win, but it was a challenging match on the road."
