Thanks to timely kills from Silvia Sartori and Brooke Wilsman the Lee volleyball team rallied to defeat Christian Brothers in a five-set thriller (22-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-21, 15-12) on Tuesday evening inside Walker Arena.
The Lady Flames found themselves down 2-1 after dropping set three by a 25-13 margin. The Lady Bucs never trailed in the set and seemed poised to steal a road victory from Lee. The Lady Flames found the right combination late in set four, winning 25-21 before outlasting the Memphis club in the fifth and final set, 15-12.
"I thought we showed a lot of poise to come back and play better in the fourth and fifth sets," said head coach Andrea Hudson. "We made a lot of unforced errors early in the match and we talked about cleaning up those mistakes. I was really proud of our team tonight."
Sartori recorded 16 kills and added 18 digs to help the winning effort. Wilsman added a team high 17 slams to go along with 10 digs. Hillary Hoffpauir set the offensive in motion with 31 assists while Sadie Johnson added 17 helpers.
"I knew we needed to clean up our game going into the fourth set and that I needed to start putting away some points and I was able to do that and help us get the win," said Wilsman after the match.
The Lady Flames caught fire in set four, with 20 kills on a .367 hitting percentage. Lee continued the slugging in set five with a sizzling .455 attack percentage.
Catherine Conley and Blaire Beamer added nine kills each for the Lady Flames while Stephanie Hernandez led the club with 22 digs.
Alexis Gillis registered 17 kills and 11 digs to pace Christian Brothers. Jessica Reber added 39 assists and Marissa Wong anchored the defense with 22 digs.
The Lady Flames improve to 5-3 overall and an even 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The Lady Bucs fall to 4-6 on the season and are 1-3 in conference matches.
Lee will continue play in the rugged GSC as they host perennial powers West Florida and Valdosta State this weekend. On Friday, the Lady Flames welcome the Argos at 6 p.m. before hosting the Lady Blazers on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
