It was everything you would come to expect from two powerhouse programs as No. 16 Union edged the Lee women's basketball team, 73-71 in overtime on Thursday evening from Walker Arena.
The Lady Flames had the last possession but saw a Kayla Beavers corner three fall off the front of the rim to seal the victory for the Lady Bulldogs.
Freshman Haris Price buried a triple with three seconds left in regulation to tie things up at 60 and send the contest into the extra period. Price finished with six points and four assists.
Sophomore Erin Walsh led the way for the Lady Flames with 27 points and was 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. Walsh leads the team in scoring averaging 16.8 points per game.
Christina Johnson added 10 points and grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds. Shelby Brown chipped in 10 points and had six boards while Carrie Cheeks added nine points and five rebounds before fouling out of the contest.
"It was a great game. Obviously we hate coming out on the losing end but I thought we did so many good things tonight that we talked about in practice," said head coach Marty Rowe. "We gave up too many late offensive rebounds and forced too many things in the second half but we had a chance to win the game late and that's all you can ask for with two really good teams playing at a high level."
The sharpshooting Union squad shot 41.9 percent from the field and hit 7 of 17 triples (41.2 percent). Jada Perkins paced the effort with 18 points while forward Tiara Caldwell was a force in the post with 17 markers and six rebounds.
Jada Smith added 15 points and dished off seven assists for the Jackson club.
Rowe's club finished at 34.9 percent (22 of 63) from the field but did can 10 treys including Price's huge basket at the end of regulation.
The Lady Flames held an advantage on the glass as they pulled down 45 boards compared to 33 for the Lady Bulldogs. Lee ended with 18 turnovers while Union committed just 12 floor mistakes.
Tonight's matchup marked the third time in four games that the Lady Flames have played a game with first place in the conference on the line.
Lee falls to 12-5 overall and are now 9-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Union improves to 16-2 and is 10-2 in league play. The Lady Bulldogs are tied atop the standings with Delta State while the Lady Flames are in a three-way tie (Shorter, West Florida) for second.
"Christian Brothers is battling for a playoff spot so we've got to bounce back and be really good on Saturday and have a short memory because Christian Brothers played us really tough at their place," concluded Rowe.
Lee will get back to work on Saturday afternoon as they host the Lady Bucs at 2 p.m.
