LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Lee women's basketball team made it six straight victories with a dominating 79-42 victory over West Alabama in Monday's Gulf South Conference game.
Haris Price scored 22 points and was a near perfect 10 of 11 from the field to guide the Lady Flames who led from start to finish. The freshman point guard matched her season average with five assists.
The Lady Flames ended a stretch of 6 of 8 conference games on the road to start the season. Lee finished 5-1 in those six road contests and are now 10-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play. The loss drops the Tigers to 5-7 and 2-6 in league play.
"We did a lot of really good things tonight on both ends of the court for long stretches of play," said head coach Marty Rowe after his team claimed the road victory.
For the second straight contest the Lady Flames' stingy defense allowed the opposition to shoot just 25 percent from the field. Lee hit 56.1 percent of their shots.
The Tigers struggled mightily from the free-throw line hitting just 7 of 21. Lee converted 9 of 12 freebies good for 64.3 percent.
Erin Walsh scored 19 points and Anna Woodford chipped in 11 to go along with five rebounds for the Lady Flames. Carrie Cheeks rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points and grabbed six boards.
A staple of the early season success the Lady Flames dominated in the paint, outscoring the Tigers 48-14 while holding a 42-35 advantage on the glass.
Rowe's club committed just 12 turnovers while forcing the Alabama club into 14 floor mistakes.
"Jo (Jordan Neuharth) and Tori (Lentz) were great defensively together off the bench for us," added Rowe. "We also got great effort out of Jenna (Scoggins) and Destiny (Lowden) late in the game. They play so hard when they get their chance and it's infectious throughout the team. I'm really proud of how we finished the game even with a big lead."
West Alabama's leading scorer, Ariel Wilson was held to eight points. Wilson averaged 15.8 points coming into the contest. Peyton Parker matched Wilson with eight points while Sydney King tallied eight rebounds.
Lee improves to 5-0 all-time against West Alabama and will now set its sights on a showdown with No. 22 Delta State on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Walker Arena. The Lady Statesmen entered tonight's action tied for first with the Lady Flames in the GSC.
"If we can stay focused we have chance to be really good. We've made it through the tough part of our schedule with a 5-1 mark on the road early this year," concluded Rowe. "Now we've got to get really and can't have a letdown at home against a really good Delta State team. We have to protect home court."
