JACKSON, Tenn. – A pair of Lee veteran soccer players hooked up to give the Lady Flames a hard-fought 1-0 victory over host Union University on Sunday afternoon.
Summer Lanter dished off a pass to Kinsey Cichowitz in the 86
th minute for the game-winning goal. It was the fourth goal of the season for Cichowitz and Lanter's first assist. Lanter placed her assist in the box and Cichowitz nailed her shot into the lower-right corner of the net.
The win keeps Lee's sheet clean in the Gulf South Conference (GSC), 7-0 and improves the sixth-ranked Lady Flames' record to 7-1-1 overall. Union dropped to 3-2-1 and 3-4-2.
Lee had a commanding margin in shots (21) and on goal (9). The Bulldogs were able to get off just four shots against Lee's talented defense. Three of their shots were on goal but Haley Gribler had three key saves in picking up the win. Kristen Francis kept Union in the contest with eight saves.
"Today capped off a good weekend for us," commented Lee coach Chris Hennessey. "We knew it was going to be a tough road trip, but to come away with two wins is very pleasing.
"I thought this was our best performance of the season, over the entire 90 minutes. Although the scoreline doesn't reflect it, we created plenty of chances, but the ball just wouldn't fall for us."
The Lady Flames return to the Lee Soccer Field on Friday and will host Spring Hill College in their annual Kickin' It For Cancer match. Next Sunday will find Lee entertaining West Florida in what could turn out to be a battle for top honors in the GSC.
