Chargers Sweep Flames In GSC Series Opener

Third Game Of Series Scheduled For Sunday Afternoon

 

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Lee University baseball team opened Gulf South Conference (GSC) play with two losses to The University of Alabama in Huntsville Saturday afternoon at Charger Park. UAH plated five runs in the sixth inning to win the opener 7-2 and held on to win 2-1 in the nightcap.

The Flames (5-4, 0-2 GSC) and Chargers (7-4, 2-0 GSC) are scheduled to play the finale of the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Lee's offense struggled in both games of the doubleheader. The Flames recorded just seven hits and plated three runs, while UAH tallied nine runs on 14 hits.

Trenton Hill, MJ Brown and Ben Holland were the offensive leaders for the Flames. Hill had two doubles and a home run. Brown delivered two hits, including an RBI double, and Holland drove in a run with a double.

UAH 7, Lee 2
Lee took a 1-0 lead with an RBI double by Holland in the third inning. UAH used seven hits and a Lee error to plate five runs in the sixth inning. Hill blasted his first home run of the season in the top of the eighth, but the Chargers followed with a two-run home run by Trey Mathis to supply the final margin.

Hill also ripped his fourth double of the season to finish with two of Lee's five hits. Brown recorded a double and Chris Adams singled in the loss.

Justin Alleman (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out five in 5 1/3 innings. Tyler Burcham scattered three hits and fanned one in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Kyle Briner pitched the eighth inning and allowed two runs and one hit.

Wilson Adams earned the win for UAH. Adams (2-1) gave up two runs, five hits, walked three and struck out eight in 7 1/3 innings pitched. Taylor Clemons pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to tally his second save.

UAH 2, Lee 1
Offense was at a premium in game two. The Flames and Chargers combined for three runs and five hits in the seven-inning affair.

UAH's Mathis drove in a run with a double and scored on a single to put the Chargers up 2-0 in the second inning.

The Flames cut the deficit in half with an RBI single by Brown in the sixth inning, but Lee was unable to push the tying run across.

Hill (2-1) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Lee. The left-hander gave up two runs, three hits, walked three and struck out six in 5 2/3 innings of work. Christian Bokich recorded an out on the lone batter he faced.

Will Myers picked up the win after allowing one run on two hits. Myers (3-0) walked four and struck out seven. Chris Kilpatrick walked one and recorded three strikeouts over the final two innings to earn his second save of the season.
