CLEVELAND, Miss. – For the second straight weekend the Lee softball team faced the daunting task of playing an undefeated Gulf South Conference (GSC) team on the road as it visited Delta State on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Statesmen took both games of Saturday's twin bill over the Lady Flames winning 5-4 in game one and 8-3 in game two.
The Lady Flames are now 9-9 overall and 2-6 in league play while the Lady Statesmen continue their torrid start to the season at 16-4 and a perfect 8-0 in the GSC.
The two clubs will wrap up the three-game Gulf South Conference series on Sunday with a single game at 2 p.m. EST.
GAME 2 –LEE 3, DSU 8
Despite three hits from Amanda Lynn the Lee softball team fell in the nightcap, 8-3 to Delta State.
Taylor Johnson (5-2) went all seven innings and allowed just two runs on eight hits.
The Lady Flames used three pitchers in the loss. Angie Hughes (3-5) started and was tagged with the loss. She gave up five runs, three earned in just 1 1/3 innings. Hailey Clark came on to work two innings and gave up three more runs on six hits. Bri Eichbaum pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and did not give up a run.
Hallie Davis continued her nice day at the dish for Lee with two more hits including a double. Lynn finished with three singles and score two runs. Emily Dagnan had two hits and got Lee on the board in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly.
Morgan Kazerooni got Delta state going at the plate with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. She added a RBI double in the fourth frame and finished with three hits and three RBI. Kassidy Tally, Kaitlin Moore and Jordan Jones each had two singles as the Lady Statesmen finished with 10 hits in the contest.
GAME 1 - LEE 4 DSU 5
The Lee softball team was unable to overcome a 5-1 in falling to Delta State, 5-4 in game one.
The Lady Statesmen jumped out early lead on Lady Flames' starter Leigh Beatenbough (1-2) scoring a pair of runs in the first frame. Abi Gibson singled in a run and Madison Zoeller followed with a sacrifice fly to give the home team the early advantage.
After the Lady Flames jumped on the board in the third thanks to a Lexie Dean double the Lady Statesmen tallied three more runs in the bottom of the inning. A wild pitch scored Moore before Nunez delivered a two-run single up in the middle to make it 5-1.
Lee would score two more runs in the fourth and add a solo run in the fifth but that would be all. Taylor Tucker (6-1) went the distance in the circle for the Lady Statesmen and allowed four runs on 11 hits. Despite the 11 base knocks she did not allow a walk and struck out a pair.
Beatenbough pitched through some trouble and tossed all six innings for Lee. She allowed six hits, five runs and had five punch outs.
Dean finished with two hits and the lone extra base hit for Lee in the contest. Freshmen Hallie Davis and Stevie Baird each recorded two singles.
