GULF SHORES, Ala. – Thanks to five home runs the Lee softball team swung past Tuskegee, 14-5 to finish up the Gulf Shores Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Flames ended the three-day event with a 3-2 mark and are now 5-3 overall. Tuskegee falls to 0-4 on the young season.
The home run derby started early as NiaRaye Ceasar launched a two-run bomb in the top of the first to put Lee up early.
Tuskegee added a solo run in the first but the Lady Flames bounced right back with two more tallies in the second frame on a Stevie Baird double and an Amanda Lynn single.
The Golden Tigers kept within shouting distance as Roneshia Rudolph stole home to cut the Lady Flames' lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second.
From that point on however it was all Lee. Freshman Hallie Davis continued her torrid start at the plate with two more home runs in the sixth and seventh innings and finished with three RBI. The local product from Walker Valley High School has already hit five dingers in just eight collegiate starts.
Lee broke the contest open with an eight-run seventh inning as Emily Dagnan, Davis and Stevie Baird all homered. Baird also added a double, a single and drove in four runs to cap off the weekend.
Angie Hughes (2-2) was solid in the circle for Lee and worked six innings allowing two runs on six hits for her second win of the season. After struggling with control in her previous outings, the senior demonstrated great control allowing no free passes while dialing up seven punch outs.
Chante Warner registered a double and single while Kaylin Finch and Jamaica Williams added two hits each to lead the Golden Tigers.
Tori Beth Garner tossed 6 1/3 innings for Tuskegee and allowed 11 runs on 12 hits. Acey Spence came on in relief to record the final two outs while surrendering three more runs on four hits.
The Lee offense is hitting at a .357 clip with nine home runs and 72 runs scored through eight games.
The Lady Flames will look to keep the bats sizzling as they open up conference play against West Florida at Butler Field next weekend. The three game tilt will open with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
