Flames Take Series From Lions, 8-1

Trent Hill Helps Pithc and Hit Lee to Victory

Lee baseball claimed a Gulf South Conference series (2-1) with a convincing 8-1 victory over the University of North Alabama on Saturday afternoon at Olympic Field.

Coach Mark Brew told his Flames after a disappointing series lost (1-2) to West Georgia last weekend that his goal for his team the rest of the GSC season was to win each series.

After what could be called a "give-away loss" to North Alabama in the second game of a Friday doubleheader, and Lee facing one of the top pitchers in the conference (Riley Sanderson) on Saturday, hopes of its first series win of the campaign seemed dim.

The Flames went right to work against the Lions' ace, taking advantage of a couple of the visitor's errors and claiming a 6-0 lead after two innings.

The two-run first inning began on a one-out single by Ben Holland. Trent Hill, the starting and winning Lee pitcher, helped his own cause with an RBI double. He later scored on a one-base hit by Tyler Payne.

The Flames went back to work in the second. Geremy Walton singled. Ty Broady reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt. Holland walked and Hill drove in his second run of the day with a single. Chris Adams would highlight the four-run frame when his single plated two runs.

The margin reached 7-0 in the fourth when Broady singled, Luke Tom's collected a two-base hit and Adams posted his second RBI with a sac fly to left.

Coach Brew said he thought a big key to the victory came when the Lions sent 12 men to the plate in the fifth and sixth innings and were only able to score one run. "Hill didn't have his best stuff but he was able to work his way out of those jams," commented Brew.

Hill pitched six innings to improve his record to 3-2. He allowed six hits, fanned six and walked four. Lefty Corbin Lamb drew praise from Brew after hurling the seventh and eighth innings and allowing just one hit and striking out three. Kyle Briner came on pitch a perfect ninth.

Hill, Toms and Walton doubled in the win and Kevin Hall tripled for North Alabama. Taylor Hayes and Dylan Calhoun each posted a pair of hits.

The Flames improved to 11-12 overall and 4-8 in GSC play. North Alabama dropped to 13-7, 7-5. Lee will be at Stillman (Birmingham) on Wednesday for a single nine-inning, non-conference game. They return to GSC play on Saturday and Sunday traveling to Rome, Ga. to face Shorter in a three-game series.
